Ingredients
Spiced Apples
- 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties work well; slices may also be used)
- 1 ½ tsp lemon juice
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
Crisp Topping
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats may be used, but texture will vary slightly)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced into small cubes
- Pinch of kosher salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Baking Dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray, then set aside.
2. Make the Spiced Apples
In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples with granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat, then transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.
3. Prepare the Crisp Topping
In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and salt. Add the diced cold butter. Using a pastry cutter, press and twist through the butter until the mixture resembles coarse, pea-sized crumbs. Alternatively, two forks or your hands may be used for this step.
4. Assemble and Bake
Spread the prepared topping evenly over the apples, lightly pressing down to ensure an even layer. Bake for 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden and the filling is bubbly.
5. Serve
Serve warm, topped with vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
Chef Tips
- Chopped apples yield approximately 6–7 cups.
- Ovens vary; adjust baking time slightly as needed.
- For a less juicy filling, add a small amount of flour to the apple mixture before baking.
Make-Ahead Directions
- To Prepare in Advance: Bake as directed, allow to cool, then cover and refrigerate until the next day. When ready to serve, set out at room temperature for about 20 minutes, then bake at 350°F for approximately 30 minutes or until heated through.
- Freezing Instructions: While untested, many have frozen this successfully; defrost in the fridge before reheating.
Enjoy this nostalgic apple crisp any time of year!
